The Tao Te Ching – Chapter 40

English Translation

Returning is the motion of the Tao. Yielding is the way of the Tao. All things are born of being. Being is born of non-being.

Original Text

反者道之动,弱者道之用。天下万物生于有,有生于无。

Explanation with Examples

  1. The Tao operates through a dynamic of opposites, with each thing containing the seed of its opposite. Just as day turns into night and summer turns into winter, the Tao is constantly returning to its source and beginning anew. By yielding and remaining flexible, the Tao is able to adapt to changing circumstances and remain eternally vital.
  2. All things in the world arise from the realm of being, which is the manifest world of form and substance. But being itself arises from non-being, the formless and empty realm of pure potential. Just as a seed contains the potential for a great tree, the Tao contains the potential for all things to arise and return to their source.

Call to Action

To align ourselves with the Tao and tap into its transformative power, we must learn to embrace the dynamic of opposites and the power of yielding. By remaining flexible and open to change, and by staying connected to the source of all being, we can navigate life’s challenges with grace and wisdom.

Take action today:

  • Embrace the dynamic of opposites in your life, recognizing that each thing contains the seed of its opposite
  • Practice yielding and remaining flexible in the face of change and challenge
  • Stay connected to the source of all being, the formless realm of pure potential from which all things arise
  • Trust in the transformative power of the Tao to guide you through life’s ups and downs
  • Remember that returning to the source is the natural motion of the Tao, and that by aligning ourselves with this motion, we can find renewal and vitality

By embracing the dynamic of opposites and the power of yielding, we can align ourselves with the Tao and tap into its transformative power. Remember that all things are born of being, and being is born of non-being, and that by staying connected to the source of all life, we can navigate the world with grace and wisdom.
