English Translation
A good traveler leaves no tracks. A good speaker makes no slips. A good reckoner needs no tally. A good door needs no lock, yet no one can open it. Good binding requires no knots, yet no one can loosen it. Therefore, the sage takes care of all men and abandons no one. He takes care of all things and abandons nothing. This is called “following the light.” What is a good man? A teacher of a bad man. What is a bad man? A good man’s charge. If the teacher is not respected, and the student not cared for, confusion will arise, however clever one is. This is the crux of mystery.
Original Text

The sage’s ability to act with effortless mastery and leave no traces is truly impressive. It reminds me of the saying ‘the best kung fu is no kung fu,’ where the highest level of skill is so natural that it appears effortless.
I find the concept of the sage taking care of all people and abandoning no one to be very compassionate and inspiring. It’s a reminder that we should strive to see the value and potential in everyone, even those who may seem difficult or ‘bad.’
The idea of the sage being like a skilled craftsman is a beautiful analogy. It makes me think of the care and attention to detail that goes into creating something of value, and how we can apply that same level of care to our actions and relationships.
I’m curious to learn more about the relationship between the teacher and student in this passage. It seems to suggest that mutual respect and care are essential for avoiding confusion and achieving understanding.
I wonder how the concept of ‘abandoning nothing’ applies to our modern world, where we are often encouraged to be selective and efficient with our time and resources. Is there a way to balance this with the sage’s approach of caring for all things?
The idea of the ‘bad man’ being the ‘good man’s charge’ is intriguing to me. It suggests that even those who may seem beyond help are still worthy of our care and attention, and that we have a responsibility to guide them towards the light.
I’m struck by the paradoxical nature of some of these statements, like ‘a good door needs no lock, yet no one can open it.’ It’s a reminder that true mastery often involves a kind of effortless ease that may seem contradictory or impossible to those who haven’t achieved it.
The more I sit with this passage, the more I find myself pondering the nature of wisdom and what it means to be a ‘sage.’ It’s a high bar to aspire to, but one that feels worth striving for.
I can’t help but chuckle at the image of a ‘good reckoner’ who ‘needs no tally.’ It’s a clever way of illustrating the idea of effortless mastery, where one’s skill is so ingrained that it becomes second nature.
