English Translation
Nature says few words. Hence a squall lasts not a whole morning, nor does a rainstorm last a whole day. Who is their maker? Heaven and Earth. If even Heaven and Earth cannot make them long lasting, how much less so can man? Therefore, one who follows the Tao is in accord with the Tao. One who practices virtue is in accord with virtue. One who loses the way is in accord with the loss. He who is in accord with the Tao is gladly accepted by the Tao. He who is in accord with virtue is gladly accepted by virtue. He who is in accord with loss is gladly accepted by loss. When there is not enough faith, there is lack of faith.
Original Text
Explanation with Examples
- Nature is a model of simplicity and brevity. Just as a squall or rainstorm does not last forever, our words and actions should be concise and to the point. By aligning ourselves with the natural way of the Tao, we can cultivate a sense of simplicity and efficiency in our lives.
- Those who follow the Tao, practice virtue, or lose their way will naturally be accepted by the corresponding force. Just as water naturally flows downhill, those who align themselves with the Tao will be gladly accepted by it. However, if there is a lack of faith or sincerity, this acceptance will be lacking as well.
Call to Action
To cultivate a life of simplicity and harmony with the Tao, we must learn to speak and act with brevity and sincerity. By aligning ourselves with the natural way of the Tao and practicing virtue, we can find acceptance and fulfillment in our lives.
Take action today:
- Practice speaking and acting with brevity and simplicity, like the natural world
- Cultivate a sense of sincerity and faith in your interactions with others and the Tao
- Align yourself with the Tao and practice virtue, knowing that you will be gladly accepted by them
- Let go of excess and complexity in your life, and embrace the simplicity of the Tao
- Trust in the natural flow of the universe, even when things seem to be lost or difficult
By embracing the simplicity and brevity of the Tao, we can cultivate a life of harmony and fulfillment. Remember that the greatest wisdom often comes from saying and doing less, and trusting in the natural way of the universe.
